The Stonecutter represents the Japanese culture very well. In the story there is a mountain spirit. Japan has many mountains on its numerous islands. Also they are polytheistic, because they believe in multiple spirits. When the stonecutter is transformed into a prince, he talks about having a parasol over his head. In Japan pale and freckle-less skin is desired. He also asks to be transformed into a cloud so he could rain over everything. In Japan they have a wet season called a monsoon when it rains almost constantly for half year. He eventually returns to his original job as a stonecutter. This is a good example of Japan’s high work ethic.
